چکیده

A survey of Galactic gamma-ray sources at a median energy of ∼20 TeV has been performed using the Milagro Gamma Ray Observatory. Eight candidate sources of TeV emission are detected with pre-trials significance > 4.5σ in the region of Galactic longitude l ∈ [30◦, 220◦] and latitude b ∈ [−10◦, 10◦]. Four of these sources, including the Crab nebula and the recently published MGRO J2019+37, are observed with significances > 4σ after accounting for the trials involved in searching the 3800 square degree region. All four of these sources are also coincident with EGRET sources. Two of the lower significance sources are coincident with EGRET sources and one of these sources is Geminga. The other two candidates are in the Cygnus region of the Galaxy. Several of the sources appear to be spatially extended. The fluxes of the sources at 20 TeV range from ∼ 25% of the Crab flux to nearly as bright as the Crab. 1 Michigan State University, East Lansing, MI 2 University of California, Irvine, CA 3 University of Maryland, College Park, MD 4 Los Alamos National Laboratory, Los Alamos, NM 5 University of California, Santa Cruz, CA 6 George Mason University, Fairfax, VA 7 New York University, New York, NY 8 Instituto de Astronomia, Universidad Nacional Autonoma de Mexico, D.F., MEXICO 9 NASA Goddard Space Flight Center, Greenbelt, MD 10 University of New Hampshire, Durham, NH 11 Ohio State University, Lima, OH

Surveying The TeV Sky With Milagro

A wide field of view, high duty factor TeV gamma-ray observatory is essential for studying TeV astrophysical sources, because most of these sources are either highly variable or are extended. Milagro is such a TeV detector and has performed the deepest survey of the Northern hemisphere sky. In addition to detecting the Crab Nebula and Mrk 421, which are known TeV sources, Milagro has made the f...

Results from the Milagro Gamma-Ray Observatory

The Milagro Gamma-Ray Observatory, located at an altitude of 2630m in the mountains of northern New Mexico, is a water-Cherenkov extensive air shower detector consisting of a 4800m covered pond instrumented with 723 PMTs. For improved sensitivity, 175 instrumented water tanks have recently been added surrounding the pond, covering an area of 40, 000m. Milagro continuously observes the entire ov...

Recent Results of the Milagro Experiment

To date, our most important published observational results with Milagro have been: • The first detection of TeV gamma rays from the Galactic plane [1], • The mapping of the diffuse Galactic gamma-ray emission at TeV energies, including the detection of the Cygnus Region at high-significance (over 10 ) [2] • The discovery of a new (slightly extended) source (MGRO J2019+37) of TeV gamma rays emb...

OBSERVATION OF TeV GAMMA RAYS FROM THE FERMI BRIGHT GALACTIC SOURCES WITH THE TIBET AIR SHOWER ARRAY

Using the Tibet-III air shower array, we search for TeV γ-rays from 27 potential Galactic sources in the early list of bright sources obtained by the Fermi Large Area Telescope at energies above 100 MeV. Among them, we observe 7 sources instead of the expected 0.61 sources at a significance of 2σ or more excess. The chance probability from Poisson statistics would be estimated to be 3.8×10. If ...
